An F-4 Phantom from VF-151 "Vigilantes" falling into the sea after its nose wheel collapsed during launch from the USS Coral Sea. c1970. Thankfully, the crew ejected safely! Terry Ayers: "I was an AE2 in VF 151 when that accident happened. The Pilot survived, his RIO did not. The RIO was lost at sea and his body never recovered. We were returning from 69-70 WESTPAC. This was the flyoff launch to homeport NAS Miramar. The Coral Sea's homeport was Alameda. This was the first plane to launch. It was piloted by the Squadron CO CDR Fred Winton His RIO was LCDR Bob Keating. Both men came down on the deck and both were swept overboard. LCDR Keating actually hit the windscreen of another Squadron F-4 staging to launch and was then swept overboard. CDR Winton was picked up, LCDR Keating was lost. It's likely LCDR Keating was decease when he went into the water. I didn't witness the actual incident live. I did watch the "official" video back at Miramar. Sad homecoming...." https://www.facebook.com/groups/120...350&hoisted_section_header_type=recently_seen
