Robert McBride, a B-17 waist gunner, reminisces about the introduction of electrically heated gear around 1942. Initially, the gear included boots, socks, and sweaters, all of which were plugged into outlets near the gun positions. When functioning properly, these electric garments provided considerable comfort. However, McBride notes that the electric cords were delicate and prone to damage during the chaotic conditions of flight missions. They frequently tore apart or short-circuited, sometimes leading to uncomfortable situations such as wet socks against shorted boot inserts.
Despite these issues, McBride highlights the importance of the electric gear, especially at high altitudes where temperatures were extremely cold. He mentions that even with discomfort (referred to as "hot foot"), removing boots was not a viable option due to the harsh conditions of high-altitude flights.
As more items were added to their gear by ground commanders, McBride and his fellow crew members had to make choices based on personal preferences and practicality, often leaving some items in their bags unless inspection demanded otherwise. McBride also mentions trading for British gear, noting the superiority of British goggles and high-flying boots lined with sheepskin, which provided warmth without the need for electricity. This was particularly advantageous compared to the issues faced with fogging or icing of standard US-issue goggles.
Overall, McBride's account provides a vivid picture of the challenges and adaptations made by bomber crews during World War II, illustrating both the technological advancements and practical limitations of the era's aviation gear.
