U-511 was notable for the first experiments in May 1942 trialing the 300mm Wurfkörper 42 submerged rocket missile launching system. The German scientist behind this Dr. Ernest A. Steinhoff was later 'Paperclipped' to the U.S. Army after the war servinga long career in rocket development for the U.S.
