This a neat WWII-period Dutch-released(!) so-called press-release photo - officially authorised for publication by the German authorithies - depicting a German truck and driver along the French border, in overall nice condition. The fairly large-sized photo (measuring 23 x 16 cms.) is not dated and regrettably misses its explanatory text-paper. There are some neat details visible in this photo such as the tactical sign, which is IMO for a Eastern volunteer (Turkistanian?) related unit. Simply a nice - and unusally encountered! - press-release picture!

-In Simferopol/Russland malte Gerhard Sperling 1943 Soldaten der sog. „Ostlegion". In ihr kämpften nichtrussische, moslemische Volksgruppen u.a. die Krimtataren, die seit 1937 von Stalin teils deportiert, teils ermordet wurden. Der Angriff deutscher Truppen unterbrach die Vernichtungsaktion. Viele kämpften daraufhin auf deutscher Seite in den sog. „Ostlegionen".

1. Jacq Stevens takes this photograph of German soldiers massing around a watertank on an improvised cart. Second from the left is Dutch war reporter Ton van Beers and on the far right an ANEFO photographer, possibly Jan de Jong (Jacq Stevens Collection / Gooi & Vechtstreek Archive).

2. Note the Asian features of most of these soldiers; they belonged to one of the many “Ostbattalionen” stationed in The Netherlands – former Russian POW’s pressed into German service. An uncertain future lay ahead of these soldiers as most of them would eventually be handed over to the Soviets…(Jacq Stevens Collection / Gooi & Vechtstreek Archive).

3. Ton van Beers looks at the camera whilst a group of Luftwaffe soldiers is passing by. On the right one can see Jacq Stevens who is shooting the footage that can be seen on this webpage. In the background one of the transit camps (Jacq Stevens Collection / Gooi & Vechtstreek Archive).

4. The same scene photographed here by Jan de Jong. A long column of Luftwaffe soldiers is passing by. In the centre of the picture Ton van Beers and an ANEFO cameraman are talking to a German soldier (ANEFO).

Трудно угадать, я в азиатской антропологии не очень силен. Интересный убор у мужыка.

 

Оказывается, это март 1943 года.
